MARNI’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR FRANCESCO RISSO HONOURED AT THE 2024 GQ GLOBAL CREATIVITY AWARDS
In April 2024 Marni's Creative Director was honoured at the GQ Global Creativity Awards, an accolade bestowed on the most influential people in today's cultural landscape. Held in New York, GQ's “Big Ideas for a Better World” gala paid tribute to industry innovators who in recent years have promoted a world that is increasingly multidisciplinary and oriented towards creativity.
Welcomed by American artist and friend of the house Erykah Badu, Risso received this important award for successfully leading Marni into a new era. Since his appointment in 2016, he has promoted visceral creativity through collections rooted in tactility, blending different disciplines into a multifaceted whole, and encouraging creative interactions with talent from different backgrounds through special collaborations and capsule collections.
Risso's award was celebrated with an extravagant musical act performed by a marching band dressed in a total Marni look, which performed an original composition by the well-known English musician Dev Hynes.
The vibrant style of the clothes worn by the band, handmade in the ateliers of Milan, exemplifies Marni's instinctive creativity: stripes and macro-checks in bold brushstrokes powerfully painted on tailored jackets with frayed edges, draped dresses, structured shirts and skirts in bonded cotton, leather jackets, and on overcoats in faux fur, loafers, studded shoes and Fussbett sabots. This series of unique garments became a limited edition collection, exclusively presented at Marni's New York boutique in Soho and celebrated in an event that took place on 1 May 2024 in New York.
Hunter Schafer
Hunter Schafer wears a custom-made MARNI look inspired by the Autumn/Winter 2024 runway. The American actress, who is also among the honorees of the 2024 GQ Global Creativity Awards, attended the event in a sculptural gown, featuring a deep V-neckline on the front and a high slit at the back. Crafted from the finest silk duchesse, this special design was hand-painted blending pale yellow, light blue, and charcoal tones. The contrasting raw cut edges, as well as its vinylic texture, emphasize the handcrafted approach that permeates the construction of this one-of-a-kind dress. Hand-painted pointed pumps in leather with rubber sole complete the look.
Erykah Badu
American singer-songwriter Erykah Badu, who presented Francesco Risso with the GQ Award, wears a custom-made trench-coat in white leather, featuring a bold hand-painted windowpane motif. A signature Badu’s hat in hand-died faux-fur completes the ensemble, dialing up the unpredictable mix of patterns with bold striping.
